Murrells Inlet organization makes SC Secretary of State's list of 'Angel' charities

MURRELLS INLET (WMBF) - South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond announced the 20th annual Scrooges and Angels list of 2015. Ten Angels as well as one Honorary Angel were recognized at a press conference and honored with a reception in the Secretary of State's Office following the announcement.

The "Angels" that were honored represent organizations that exemplify charitable giving in South Carolina. Representatives from all organizations were in attendance to receive a plaque and recognition from Secretary Hammond. The Angels recognized have the highest percentage of their expenditures that went toward their program services. One organization is in Murrells Inlet: Toomey's Kids.

According to organizer Ted Prehodka, spending 94.8 percent of their proceeds to their charity is "really rather simple." He said no one gets paid for anything, where many other organizations pay employees. Prehodka said he runs the organization out of his home, that way they're not paying for rent or other utilities. He said it's 100 percent for the kids; the only thing that comes out of the proceeds is money for a storage unit.

Six hundred kids from 39 schools are a part of Toomey's Kids. They go on 4 big trips throughout the year, and every August, the organization gives each elementary and middle school teacher $500 to spend on the kids and $1000 for the high school teachers.
