MARION COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Marion County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call Monday morning in reference to a van that was stolen from the Marion County Coroner, the suspects fled to the woods and the search was called off Monday morning.
Sherick Eugene Campbell, age 23, of Latta, and Jonathan Patrick Berry-Campbell, age 22, of Latta, were arrested and charged with accessory after the fact of a class E felony, a release from Marion County Sheriff Mark Richardson states.
A third suspect, Eddie Scarborough, Jr., is also wanted for possession of a stolen vehicle in connection with this theft.
"OH yes, I was shocked… it was locked," Jimmy Richardson, Marion County Coroner said.
Richardson said after using his funeral van on Sunday, he did not expect deputies to call him in the middle of the night to tell him it had been stolen and then recovered.
"The deputy just happened to be proactive. He drove up and seen something suspicious," Major Brian Wallace with the Marion County Sherriff's Office said.
Investigators said the deputy saw the suspects trying to pull the funeral van from a muddy field off of Highway 301, in the Sellers area.
When those suspects saw the officer they reportedly took off on foot.
"I went over to Sellers, surely enough it was bogged down and there was another truck hooked to it with a long chain attempting to pull it out," Richardson said.
Richardson added the van wasn't the only thing those men targeted. He said they also tried to break into a shed behind the funeral home.
"I can't imagine someone trying to steal a casket or a hearse, but I guess there is a market for just about everything," Richardson added.
