Turkey fryers are Thanksgiving holiday's biggest fire hazard

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - All the cooking going on this Thanksgiving can be a concern for Horry County Fire Rescue.

Captain Grzymalski says he has responded to numerous cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day in the past. His biggest concerns are cooking fires made by people cooking that don’t typically cook.  He says the main reason for such fires is turkey frying done in unsafe parts of the home.

Grzymalsky says the biggest fire hazard on Thanksgiving are Turkey fryers. You should never fry your turkey indoors including your garage. Your turkey should be fully thawed and should not have any wetness when dropping it into the fryer.  If something goes wrong, or even if you’re uncertain or unsure, call the fire department right away.

Even an unclean oven can cause a fire and hot oil can case a serious a burn.  The firefighters at Forestbrook Road and the rest of Horry County will be on call all day Thanksgiving and into the next day.
