Over 1,500 turn out to run and walk at Surfside Beach Turkey Trot

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – About 1,500 walkers and runners participated in the Surfside Beach Turkey Trot Thursday morning, which supported that Surfside Area Rotary Club and their charitable works in the Surfside Beach community.

“So why start your day with a run instead of getting up and putting a turkey in the oven?  So we don't feel guilty for eating the turkey!” said participant Michelle Touch.

The Trot featured a 5k race, a 10k race, a 1-mile run and a “tot trot.” All races started and finished at the Surfside Beach Pier.

Among those participating was Misty Dion, formally Misty White, a Grand Strand runner who was struck by a car while running in 2013 and seriously injured. She came in second place for females in the 10k race.

“We're out here celebrating with family,” said Rich Oliver. “My sister in law over here a year ago couldn't walk.  She's out here running the 5k today so it's been a good time with family today.”

Last year, the Turkey Trot raised over $15,000 for the Surfside Beach Area Rotary Club.
