FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – One person was killed in a traffic accident in the 4700 block of Old Marion Highway in Florence County Monday night, according to Florence County Coroner Keith vonLutcken.

Corporal Sonny Collins with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the one-vehicle collision occurred around 7:50 p.m. and involved a 1993 Mercedes sedan.

The vehicle was traveling east on Old Marion Highway when the vehicle ran off the roadway into a ditch and overturned.

Cpl. Collins said the driver who was killed as a result of the collision was not wearing a seatbelt.

Coroner vonLutcken identified the victim as 61-year-old George Dubose of Buckingham, he was the only occupant in the vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by the SCHP.

Some people who live in the area want the road improved and more patrols to make it safer.

“There are skid marks all in front of my house...where they are having to slam on breaks, so they are not hitting the bus or us trying to turn into our driveway,” Christi Gibbs, who Lives on the road said.

Gibbs said over the past several years, car crashes and close calls have plagued her community.

“This is for the beach and there is even a sign at the red light that says beach traffic this way. So of course everybody is going to come down this road,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said it’s not the traffic that concerns her it’s the speeding and erratic driving.

“What if it was like her. She just started driving so you know we have to constantly worry about are we going to get hit pulling into the road,” said.

Gibbs and her daughter watched the wreck that happened on Monday night.

“We were right behind the state trooper’s car where they had the road blocked. It was complete flat where it had flipped in the field,” said.

The Florence County Coroner say 61-year-old George Dubose was driving went off the side of the road, killing them.

He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety said over the past 5 years over, 30 accidents have happened within four mile stretch of East Old Marion Highway, which includes the 4700th block.
