Governor Haley requests expedited aid for South Carolina farmers

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – Governor Nikki Haley requested assistance from the United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack on Monday for expediting crop insurance payments to South Carolina farmers whose crops were damaged by the October flooding throughout the state.

In a letter to Secretary Vilsack, Governor Haley wrote, “Unfortunately, we are continuing to receive information from farmers that the process to file and receive payment for claims is slow and cumbersome.  In many cases, they are even required to harvest valueless crops at a significant expense. Accordingly, I am requesting your assistance to expedite this process and bring certainty to hundreds of small businesses across South Carolina.”

The news release from the South Carolina Governor’s Office also stated no South Carolina farmer with “a viable business should lose that business solely because of this flood.”
