A month of shopping holidays leads to Christmas

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The holidays are expensive. Making sure everyone on the gift list gets something special can easily drain a bank account. For gift shoppers who prefer a holiday shopping experience at the local mall, or from behind a computer screen in the comfort of their own home, special shopping days from the end of November through December are intended to lessen the blow to the wallet for every preference.

Now is the time to start planning what to shop, and when. Of course there's Black Friday, which has already started online for some retailers. But in many cases, great deals go hand-in-hand with long lines and early door-buster times.

"If you can handle it, go for it," shopper Mandy Dula said. "Me, I won't."

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is Small Business Saturday, when shoppers are encouraged to spread the love around to more than just big-box stores.

Grasshopper.com predicted consumers will spend an estimated $5.9 billion on Small Business Saturday.

"I think a lot of people are like lazy, and don't want to go out, so just shopping online would be best option for them," according to shopper Heather Mardis.

Cyber Monday is always the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is November 30 in 2015. Shoppers can find deals, in many cases, equal to what is offered on Black Friday from their own home.

For shoppers who miss Cyber Monday, Green Monday is December 8, another day specifically for online deals.

"It's really not about buying things and getting things," Dula said. "It's about doing what's right and being thankful and giving."

Since giving is the true spirit of the season, on December 1, consumers are encouraged to think of those less-fortunate on Giving Tuesday. It's a one-day national effort to raise money for charities online during the holiday shopping season.

This year, Free Shipping Day is December 18. Online businesses make one last push, and offer free shipping. Retailers that participate typically guarantee that purchases on Free Shipping Day will be delivered for free by Christmas Eve.

Lastly, for all the procrastinators, Super Saturday will be on December 19.
