FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The Bojangles’ Southern 500 race in Darlington looks to a local company in Florence to create the winning trophy. History lies at the American Trophy Company off Church Street, which has been a family owned business for 48 years. They have made the Southern 500 trophy for the past 20 of those years.

On Wednesday, they are taking three replica trophies to the racing headquarters of this year's winner, Carl Edwards. One will go to his home, and the other will be in the trophy showcase at Joe Gibbs Racing in Charlotte.

The president and owner of the American Trophy Company, Kenney Bryant, says most people don't realize the winning trophy is replicated, but he's glad to make more than one trophy because he says it helps the business out financially. “Tomorrow is the big delivery day. Of course that helps our business, the more re-orders, the better for us," said Bryant.

Their relationship with Darlington Speedway took off 20 years ago, and part of the reason, Bryant says, is because the speedway welcomes local suppliers, and together they want to bring history to the fans. With the design of this trophy, they do just that.

“This is a unique trophy, there’s no one else in NASCAR that you can look at one trophy and see from 1950 to 2015 each winner, each year,” Bryant said. This is the fourth year in a row the design has stayed the same with the trophy. He says the most thrilling part in making the trophy is when the driver’s photograph comes alive with the laser engraving machine. Each metal template with the photographed winners and the year they won wraps around the five-tier, 50 lb. trophy.

“They really take a step back and look, and say wow I’m on this trophy will all these legends," said Bryant.

This year, Bryant says there’s even interest from across the country. Toyota Racing saw the trophy presentation this year, and called the shop to have one sent just for them. So, they had a crate built and will ship a trophy to Costa Mesa, California.

“The raceway, the economy, and the impact it has on the economy... It’s just really neat to be a part of a professional sporting event. Here a company in Florence, South Carolina, a part of history," said Bryant.
