Coastal Carolina band to honor Emanuel AME victims

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Coastal Carolina will perform a concert to honor the victims of the shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church. “Hymn for Emanuel,” composed by James Syler, was commissioned by CCU’s Department of Music. The composition will be performed by the University’s Symphonic Band, conducted by Richard L. Johnson, professor of music.

The program will also include performances by CCU’s student wind band, called Coastal Winds, and its Percussion Ensemble. In addition to Johnson, the concert will feature conductors Raul Barcenes, conductor of CCU’s athletic bands, and Jesse Willis, professor of percussion. Jeffrey Jones, professor of voice, will also perform, according to the news release.

The Coastal Carolina University band concert will take place Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $7 with discounts available. Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5, and CCU/HGTC students and children’s tickets are $3.

    Florence County Sheriff deputies were responding to an assault call Friday when they discovered a victim that had been stabbed. The incident occurred on Palomar Parkway in Florence. Investigators discovered a verbal dispute had resulted in the victim being assaulted and stabbed.
