Man arrested for murder after deadly assault at Lake City club, police say

LAKE CITY, SC  (WMBF) – A 47-year-old man died after an assault at a night club in Lake City early Wednesday morning, according to the Florence County Coroner. A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder in connection with this incident, Lake City Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

James E. Welch, of Turbeville, South Carolina, died at a local hospital shortly after an altercation and assault at the “Office” night club on John Street at about 1:25 a.m., according to Coroner Keith von Lutcken. The body will be sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston to determine the exact cause of death.

Tommy McGee was arrested and charged with murder, and was detained at the Florence County Sheriff's Office, according to Lake City Police Chief Joseph Cooper.

McGee was denied bond at his hearing Wednesday afternoon, according to Chief Cooper.

The incident is under investigation by the Lake City Police Department and the Florence County Coroner’s Office.
