Married couple killed in house fire in McColl Friday

MCCOLL, SC (WMBF) – A married couple in their 70s died from smoke inhalation after a house fire in McColl Friday evening, the Marlboro County Coroner confirmed.

Billy and Lorraine Batten died in a fire at their home in the 2600 block of Highway 385, according to Coroner Tim Brown.

The fire occurred at the older, single-family home at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to Coroner Brown. Firefighters from the Wallace and McColl Fire Departments responded.

An autopsy at MUSC in Charleston confirmed the Battens died due to smoke inhalation, and their deaths were ruled accidental, according to Coroner Brown. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

The couple was not immediately identified because all their documents were destroyed in the fire, Coroner Brown said.
