Darlington police investigating after attempted child abduction Monday morning

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - A child is safe after an attempted abduction Monday morning in Darlington, according to Darlington Police Chief Danny Watson.

Police confirmed the attempted abduction happened at a residential complex on Old Florence Road off Avenue D, and that the child is okay.

Darlington police are still looking for a man they say attempted to kidnap a 12-year-old girl Monday morning.

A family member of the 12-year-old girl said the girl walked to the bus stop with some friends this morning but she turned around to go home by herself because she was cold. The girl said this was when a man dressed in all black grabbed her.

The family member said the man held the girl's mouth shut and took her over to the woods next to the apartment complex and threw her over the fence.

At some point, the girl was able to get away from the man and police say she flagged down a driver on the road.

The family member said the driver brought the girl back to her apartment and contacted her family, who called the police.

Darlington police arrived at Bowen Manor Apartments off Old Florence Road around 8 a.m.

A dog team was sent in for the search but police said they did not find the man.

People in the community said they're concerned about the safety of both the children and the elderly who live in Bowen Manor.

"If this is happening and they have the police and all of these dogs out here and looking for somebody, how are they going to feel comfortable?" Bowen Manor resident Nana Fofia said.

The family member said the family is thankful she got away from the man when she did.

According to the Darlington Police Department, there is no new information as of Tuesday. Officers have been tasked with continuing to follow-up the event. Patrol officers and investigators have been also tasked with doing additional patrols in this area in case this individual should return. Anyone who has heard or potentially saw anything please call the Darlington Police Department and ask for the Lt. of investigations.
