2015 Master National Retriever event brings hundreds to Hartsville

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF)- Hundreds of people from all over the country are coming to the City of Hartsville this weekend. They and their dogs are there for the Master National Retriever Club’s annual competition. The opening day ceremony was held at the Coker College Event Center.

This event brought hundreds to Hartsville making it a huge boost for the city. Jessica Cohen, the City of Hartsville Director of Tourism and Special Events says, “We are putting an emphasis on being as hospitable as possible. We want them to enjoy themselves and enjoy Hartsvile. Hartsville is growing. We opened two new hotels this year just in the past 18 months. I think over 20 businesses alone have opened up downtown, so we want people to engage in that growth with us, and anytime we can showcase our area and our community, I mean it’s a plus for us.”

One of those benefits is the grand opening of the Hampton Inn and Suites back in July on Carolina Ave. It is one hotel in the area housing the competitors for this national event. A hotel employee tells me this has brought great business for their new hotel and are fully booked until the end of next week.

Ory Matthews, a competitor who traveled from Texas says, “The people have been great that I’ve talked to. They are warm and welcoming and it just makes you want to come back here.”

The hunt testing and competition will take place in Cheraw and Society Hill in Hartsville throughout the week. The hunt test secretary for the event says, “We are limited on a place we can go throughout the country and handle the size of this event. I was saying earlier it’s the largest performer events in the history of the American Kennel Club, so it's hard to find a place and Hartsville has been perfect for us.”

The Master National Event happens once a year. Event organizers are excited the city of Hartsville was chosen to host this year's event, for all of the attraction to the area, and hope to host it again in the future.
