GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Georgetown County officials have received reports that people claiming to be National Guardsmen are going door-to-door, asking residents to voluntarily evacuate as part of a possible scam.

S.C. National Guard representatives at the Emergency Operations Center in Georgetown say this is not authorized by the National Guard anywhere in Georgetown County, and warn it could be a scam.

“In disasters in other areas there have been cases of people posing as authorities asking people to leave their homes, then they go in and pillage things from the home after it is empty,” county officials stated in a news release. “If someone representing themselves as a guardsman or other authority asks you to leave your home, please call the Georgetown County Emergency Operations Center, 843-545-3273, to confirm whether what they claim is legitimate.”
