Telephone scam designed to separate you from your money

Telephone scam designed to separate you from your money

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – The Florence County Sheriff's Office and Horry County Sheriff's Office wants you to be aware of a telephone scam designed to take your money.

According to the FCSO, the caller identifies himself as a United States examiner or investigator, possibly an IRS agent, informing you that you owe a substantial amount of money in back taxes or have defaulted on a payment. The caller threatens jail time if a payment is not received immediately.

The caller suggests embarrassment and inconvenience can be avoided by paying the amount with your credit card or by putting the amount owed on a gift card and providing the PIN number, according to police. You may also be asked for your Social Security number or bank account information to confirm your identity, according to a news release from the FCSO.

The FCSO suggests this pitch and anything similar to it is a scam and the best course of action is to hang up and do not return the call if you receive a voicemail containing similar claims.

The HCSO urges the public to not send or give any money to these callers and to just hang up, the release from HCSO states.

You can reach the Horry County Sheriff's Office at (843)-915-5450 and the Florence County Sheriff's Office at (843)-665-2121.
