CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Conway police are searching for a suspect after an overnight chase involving three suspects who fired shots at a vehicle following them.
Sergeant Chris WIlliamson with the CPD said the vehicle following the three suspects on 9th Avenue in Conway was not hit by a bullet. Sergeant Darren Alston said dispatch informed Conway Police Officers a witness was following the suspects.
"As the witness was behind the vehicle, the suspect vehicle fired shots while they were in pursuit trying to keep up with them to report to the officers here in Conway," Sgt. Darren Alston explained.
Police conducted a search for the suspects, all males, after they fled. They found and took two suspects into custody, including the one they believe was firing the gun. Officers do not believe the suspect still on the loose is armed.
"With the first suspect, the weapon was found with some drugs also, so we do have the weapon that was used in the incident," Sgt. Darren Alston said.
Conway Police said the witness was following a vehicle that was reported to have been involved in breaking and entering in the county. The witness also said shots were fired at him from the people inside the vehicle prior to entering the city. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle wouldn't stop and attempted to flee.
"It was reported that the victim, the witness, reported that they witnessed the subjects trying to get inside of another vehicle and they made an attempt to follow the vehicle into our city limits. And that's when our dispatchers dispatched us, and that the witness was right behind the vehicle," Sgt. Alston added.
During the pursuit, one person in the suspect vehicle jumped out near the intersection of Smith Street and 5th Avenue and was arrested. The vehicle then continued for a short distance, where two suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, according to reports.
According to police, a second suspect was arrested and officers are still searching for a third suspect. Officers also recovered a weapon near where the first suspect was arrested and a quantity of drugs were found in the suspect vehicle.
"There were three suspects in the vehicle, one of the suspects kept driving, the passenger jumped out of the vehicle. We've got that person, we've got that individual as he jumped out of the vehicle. The other suspect, we finally got hold of them and the car and made the arrest on both subjects," Sgt. Alston said.
Police are investigating exactly what happened, and said charges are pending against the two suspects in custody. WMBF News crews on scene said police were canvassing downtown Conway all morning with flashlights and spotlights.
