FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A major road widening project in Florence County is running behind schedule.
A spokesman for the SCDOT said a few permitting issues pushed the Highway 378 widening back by ten percent.
Those permits issues have been fixed and widening the 19-mile stretch of road from two lanes to five will be complete early spring of 2017.
New utility poles are being put in and soon power will be switched over to those new poles and the old poles will be taken down.
While construction is underway, the speed limit has been changed in the area to 45 mph.
"You'll notice the speed change. We know that it is inconvenient to go through there 45 for 19 miles. It is safer for everybody if we maintain that speed. Another thing we have done is made it no passing," Jamie Poston, SCDOT Engineer said.
This coming spring, crews will be completed with most of the bridge work. At that time, traffic will be routed on to them.
