GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) – They met on a blind date in 1942, and in 1945, he returned briefly from his service in the U.S. Army Air Corp to marry her. Seventy years, five daughters, five grand kids, and one great-grandson later, Mary B and Bob are still together.
Mary Buice Allen, 90, and Robert Allen, 94, now live in Gastonia, but they're heading to Garden City in October along with their extended family to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary, which is actually on September 23.
Mary Allen will be turning 91 in November, and was born and raised in Spartanburg, according to an e-mail from their daughter, Angela Allen Yates. Bob was raised in Pacolet Mills, outside of Spartanburg, and is a graduate of Wofford College. After college, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He has been retired from Southern Bell since 1983.
"They met on a blind date in 1942 and love reminiscing about the good-ol'-days," Yates states in the e-mail. "They both lived their young lives during the great depression and to this day have a very strong appreciation for being brought up learning how to do more with less."
They now both live very independently in Gastonia, Yates says.
Mary and Bob had five daughters and sent them all to college. Their daughters, grandkids, great-grandson, and extended family will all be in Garden City in October to celebrate their momentous 70th wedding anniversary.
