NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department will hold a free Medicine Drop-Off event on Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the former Staples parking lot at 244 Highway 17 North in North Myrtle Beach.
You may bring unused, expired and unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines and for NMB Public Safety personnel will dispose of them properly, according to a release from the City of North Myrtle Beach.
Only pills and other solids, like patches, can be brought to the drop-off site; liquids, needles and other sharps will not be accepted.
Unused medications pose a public health and safety concern because they can be accidentally ingested, misused, stolen and abused, the release explains.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22,134 Americans died from prescription medication overdoses, including 16,651 from narcotic painkillers.
More than 5,200 collection sites will be set up across the country on September 26 for the federal Drug Enforcement Agency's ninth event, the release states.
North Myrtle Beach Public Safety personnel will also be available during the event to help install child passenger seats or check them for proper installation.
