Man in Jeep tries to lure children at bus stop

LONGS, SC (WMBF) The Horry County Police Department is searching for a suspicious vehicle after officers say the driver tried to lure in two young girls yesterday afternoon.

For a Longs mother, Fridays pick up at the bus stop was even more of a relief than usual.

It's scary, described Ashley Jenkins. You always think this doesn't happen to people like me."

On Thursday afternoon, Ashley Jenkins' daughters hopped off the bus at the same stop they always do.

This time, the routine walk home wasnt routine at all. The girls say once the bus left, a black Jeep Cherokee pulled up, and the driver started speaking to them.

"He kept saying, come here, come look at my kitten,’” said Jenkins. One of my girls said he was trying to step out of the vehicle."

A police report from that day says everything stopped when the girls' grandfather walked into sight. Jenkins says the driver got spooked and took off, and the girls ran inside.

"It scared them pretty bad, She said. Especially when they realized what was going on."

Horry County Police are now investigating the incident and Horry County School administrators are looking into it too.

This morning, the district notified all bus drivers and nearby schools of what happened.

Back at the bus stop, Jenkins says she appreciates all the action, but plans to take matters into her own hands as well.

"I will be out here every day to see them physically get off that bus and come into this house. I will not take it for granted."

The driver is described as a man with a blue or grey shirt and a white beard.

We'll make it to the 90s again at the beach and the middle 90s inland. With temperatures a degree or two cooler than the last several days, no heat advisories are in effect, but the heat index will still climb to between 100 and 104. The afternoon and evening will see just a 30 percent chance of a stray shower or storm.
