BRIARCLIFFE ACRES, SC (WMBF) – The Briarcliffe Acres Police Department wants the public to know the Town of Briarcliffe Acres is experiencing an outbreak of what is probably distemper or possibly rabies after another young, sick and dying raccoon was reported on Middle Gate Road on Thursday.
The BAPD says that this was at least the fifth such report recently in the area bounded by North Gate Road, Ocean View Drive, southern Center Drive and Middle Gate Road.
According to a message from the BAPD, the natural course of things will be for this outbreak to reach a peak and then gradually subside.
The BAPD wants to remind residents that by law dogs and cats should be vaccinated against rabies. They are highly encouraging they receive a distemper vaccine also.
Residents are asked to not feed wild animals and to please remind children not to play with or try to help an animal that appears sick but to report them to a parent.
