MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - For the first time since 2000, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans are champions of the Carolina League after beating the Wilmington Blue Rocks in walk-off fashion by a 3-2 final on Wednesday night. The birds sweep the Blue Rocks three games to none in the best-of-five Mills Cup Championship Series.
After giving up the tying run in the top of the ninth, the Pelicans loaded the bases in the bottom half, when an infield single by Pin-Chieh Chen brought home Mark Zagunis to win the series. Victor Caratini was named the postseason MVP, driving in seven runs in six games.
Myrtle Beach ends the year on a five game winning streak. It beat Winston-Salem in two straight games after falling in a 1-0 hole in the Southern Division playoffs, and then completed the sweep of Wilmington on Wednesday.
