Public comment meeting to be held to discuss wording on Florence WWI monument

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – On September 23, the City of Florence Veterans Park Committee will accept public comment concerning the wording on the Florence WWI monument in Council Chambers, at the City Center, 324 W. Evans Street in Florence, at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting is being held to gain input regarding changing the WWI monument plaque to list soldier's names in alphabetical order rather than separated by "White enlisted" and "Colored enlisted".

Over the years, the monument, owned by Fred Sexton American Legion Post 1, has suffered effects of weather and vandalism. The Veterans Park Committee has pledged to restore and relocate the monument to the Florence Veterans Park, where it would dwell among other memorials at the park honoring those who have served in the United States military.
