MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A family and its community are in mourning after the loss of an 18 year old on Monday afternoon.
Highway patrol says Austin Blackmon died following a car crash on Highway 9 near Cheraw.
Troopers say the 18 year old drove his car over the curb and into a ditch. He later died at the hospital.
Just over 24 hours later, his family wants everyone to know how special he was.
"Every time you'd see him, he'd be smiling, and he was just amazing," said foster sister Miranda Steen. "He cared about everybody."
"I'm in shock," explained foster father Brady Steen. "It hasn't hit me yet."
Now the foster family that took him in almost a decade ago, wants to remember all the good times.
They say they'll remember the late nights watching movies with his sister, wrestling with the family dog, and Austin's love for something digital.
"He loved to take pictures of himself," laughed his foster father. "Give him the camera and he'll take pictures of himself."
Those same pictures now will be what keeps the family moving forward. Because in each one, is every memory of the son they say changed their lives.
"He was already an angel before he left, because we all needed him," said Miranda Steen.
