DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Darlington woman was arrested Wednesday morning for unlawful neglect after her four children tested positive for exposure to drugs, according to Darlington County Sheriff J. Wayne Byrd.

Berthalyn Gattison Harrell, age 36, of Oleander Drive, is charged with three counts of neglect by legal custodian.

The Department of Social Services made a referral to DCSO on this case saying Harrell put her children in harm’s way, according to a DCSO police report.

The four children all tested positive for cocaine on ChildGuard exposure screens, the report states.

The DCSO police report states Harrell tested negative for all drugs on a hair and urine screen.

Harrell is being held at the Darlington County Detention Center.
