2 wrongful death lawsuits filed against SCDOT regarding International Drive

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Two wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against the South Carolina Department of Transportation regarding International Drive.

The lawsuits, which were filed by the estate of James Toronto, Sr. and Jennifer Toronto, allege that SCDOT was negligent in providing proper signage to warn motorists of the change on International Drive from paved road to Coquina, according to civil complaints filed with Horry County Civil Court.

The civil complaints allege an abrupt change in the road caused the accident that led to the untimely death of James Toronto, Sr. on March 4, 2015.

The lawsuit requests monetary compensation for the beneficiaries. It states they have “suffered grief, sorrow and mental anguish” and that “they have lost his companionship and counsel.”

This lawsuit comes amid a battle over extending International Drive to Highway 90.

We'll make it to the 90s again at the beach and the middle 90s inland. With temperatures a degree or two cooler than the last several days, no heat advisories are in effect, but the heat index will still climb to between 100 and 104. The afternoon and evening will see just a 30 percent chance of a stray shower or storm.
