SCOTLAND COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – A 31-year-old Scotland County man has been charged with 20 felony counts of sexual offenses involving a minor under the age of 10, according to authorities.
Joshua Branson Morton, of Gum Swamp Lake Road, was charged with 19 counts of first-degree sexual offense against a child, and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child, according to Facebook post by the Scotland County Sheriff's Office.
Each count of first-degree sexual offense against a child carries a presumptive sentence of 16 to 20 years in prison, the post states. Morton's first court appearance on these charges was on Tuesday – he was jailed on a $1 million secured bond.
Morton has previously received probation for 2006 convictions of second-degree burglary and felonious restraint, the post states, and in February 2004, he was convicted of assault on a female, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and second-degree trespassing.
Court records show Morton also has pending charges in Scotland County for assault on a female, causing injury to real property, violating a domestic violence protective order, and violating a court order.
