Darlington, SC - The Southern 500 is less than a week away and Darlington is preparing for race day. Many hotels are all ready sold out of rooms and liquor store shelves are well stocked ahead of the influx of fans that are expected to flood into the town.
"We're just doing everything possible we can to make everyone happy and feel at home," Cornelius James, who works at the Raceway Inn and a local liquor store, said."Pretty sure that we are going to have to turn a lot of people away because it's labor day and the race is here...so you're going to have all different kinds of people coming from all over the state."
Rooms at the Raceway Inn have gotten a makeover ahead of race day, including new bed spreads, new carpet, and new air conditioning units among other upgrades.
But for other businesses, like Mayflower Seafood, it just makes more sense to keep their registers closed this weekend.
"Locals don't come out and, like I said, the race fans have their own agenda and usually they're grilling out and having a large time down there...so we don't get much traffic or business," Bryan Stewart with Mayflower Seafood said.
Many business managers say they see a lot of the same customers from year to year, ace fans remembering the customer service they experienced or just where to get a good deal.
