Vandalism causes Stables Park field complex closure

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Stables Park field complex in Pawleys Island, off Petigru Drive, is temporarily closed to repair its multipurpose fields after an act of vandalism on August 13.

Grass and possibly the irrigation system was destroyed after a vehicle entered the fields through a small gap in the fencing that allows access to the playground.

Parks and Recreation Department director, Beth Goodale said, “It’s very disappointing that someone would do this.”

Costs for repairing the fields are still being determined, and will depend on how extensive the damage is, and if the irrigation system has been damaged. A date has not been set for the fields’ reopen, but Georgetown County Parks and Recreation anticipates fall sports will need to be moved to another site for the start of the season.

“This is a facility that sees a lot of use and where a community playground had just been built and opened thanks to the support of residents. Now someone does something like this. It’s pure malice,” Goodale said.

If you have any information on the incident you are asked to contact the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office at (843) 546-5101. Text the word “GCSOTIP” followed by your message to 274637 to leave an anonymous tip. The text service is only for crime tips.

We'll make it to the 90s again at the beach and the middle 90s inland. With temperatures a degree or two cooler than the last several days, no heat advisories are in effect, but the heat index will still climb to between 100 and 104. The afternoon and evening will see just a 30 percent chance of a stray shower or storm.
