Community clean up days coming back in November

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - For the second time ever, you'll have a chance to join hundreds of others and help out at the Horry County Community Cleanup in November.

Every year the county does a litter index that rates the place on a one to four scale; one being good and four being poor.

Last year the county rated at 1.8, but this year it's at 2.15, meaning a countywide cleanup is needed more than ever.

With thousands of travelers driving towards Myrtle Beach every day, first impressions can often start before anyone gets into town. That's why Horry County and Keep Horry County Beautiful want to make sure the drive is litter free.

"Everyone's part of the problem, we can also be a part of the solution, said Bo Ives with Keep Horry County Beautiful.

Ives says this year the county started a litter department funded by accommodations taxes. Its goal is to start tackling the litter problem, but it's not the whole solution.

Now you too can help, with the second annual community cleanup day in November.

"We're hoping everyone will come out again, and they'll get the message that it really does take all of us, Ives said.

Like last year, volunteers will be able to clean up nearly a dozen locations around the county.

Close to one thousand people volunteered then, and the group in charge says it expects similar numbers this year.

Ives says it's all part of a bigger push to get more people involved in keeping their communities clean.

"If we don't show through our visitors that we care, people will go to a beach that's clean, Ives said. If they come and see a trashy beach, they won't return."

This Horry County community cleanup day will happen November 7th, and the whole idea is to have a fun atmosphere.

Once done cleaning up, volunteers will be able to celebrate at the Carolina Forest Rec center, where there will even be an award for the community that clean up the most litter.

Online registration will open up in September.
