Alligator Adventure welcomes African Spotted Hyena

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Alligator Adventure in Myrtle Beach has proudly announced a new unique member of the animal kingdom to join their staff.

An African Spotted Hyena girl was born June 7, and being raised by the animal staff at Alligator Adventure. A Facebook post from Alligator Adventure says, "she is full of energy and they are excited to learn and grow with her as she develops into one of the most interesting animals around the world."

Tourists may even get a chance to catch a glimpse of her throughout the park on her daily walks. 

The public was invited to participate in the naming process. The winning name Chiku meaning “chatterer,” was picked on August 14.

Spotted hyenas are known for being vocal and making a variety of sounds, including the “laughing” that comes along with their name. Hyena Cubs are born walking, eyes open, and a mouth full of teeth, according to the Alligator Adventure social website.

Alligator Adventure said, “It was a tough voting decision and they couldn’t have done it without the public’s help.”
