PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – Acid, likely from a leaking car battery, shut down the Pawleys Island Recycling Center Thursday morning as a hazardous materials team investigated, according to a Georgetown County spokesperson.

The recycling center on Grate Ave. was temporarily closed after a potentially hazardous substance was reported by the Hazmat team, according to Georgetown County Public Information Officer Jackie Broach. The team pinpointed the source of the liquid to be a leaking car battery that someone put into one of the center’s trash containers.

The team tested all the puddles of the substance and cleaned out all items in the affected container. Broach stated that once the hazmat team has broken down its operations at the center and gives the all clear, public services staff will remove the trash from the affected container and reopen the center to public.

Until the Pawleys Island center is reopened, the public is being redirected to the Murrells Inlet Recycling Center on Wesley Road.
