Alabama family wins $100,000 from lottery ticket while en route to Myrtle Beach

COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) – While traveling to Myrtle Beach for vacation, an Alabama family won $100,000 from a $5 lottery ticket they purchased after stopping for a bathroom break, according to the SC Education Lottery.

The family stopped at the Kangaroo Express in Little River to let the kids use the bathroom, and Louis Hudson, one of the 22 family members on the trip, bought a $5 ticket and won $100,000, according to a news release.

“Everybody is still in shock,” he said on Monday when he took a detour to Columbia to cash in his winning ticket.  “This wasn’t in the plan.”

Hudson said that he can now enjoy his vacation without the stress of carrying $100,000 in his pocket. He said he hasn’t even been in the ocean because he was afraid he might drown or get bitten by a shark before he could cash the ticket.

“We are going back to our vacation,” he said.  “This is my first trip to Myrtle Beach and I plan to come back.”

Hudson won the top prize in the $5 20X game, the odds of which are 1 in 480,000. For selling the claimed ticket, the Kangaroo Express #3140 in Little River received a $1,000 commission, lottery officials said.
