Myrtle Beach Council discusses several projects Tuesday

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – At a workshop held Tuesday morning, the Myrtle Beach City Council reviewed updates to several projects and events, including the construction of a new Myrtle Beach School campus, the recently-constructed Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, the New Directions homeless shelter, parking meters, and the 2016 Myrtle Beach Marathon.

Horry County School Construction Update

Designs are underway for several new Horry County School District schools, according to an update provided by Mark Wolfe with the district.

Wolfe updated the Myrtle Beach City Council on the construction plans for the schools at a council workshop Tuesday morning. The board said they want the buildings to be energy-efficient.

No demolition date has been set for the current Myrtle Beach Intermediate School campus, but the district wants to move students in to the new campus by August of 2017.

Myrtle Beach Sports Complex

Since opening in March, the MB Sports Complex has generated nearly $10 million worth of economic impact in the community, the council believes. During the update, it was pointed out that the complex is not just for visitors: they will hold an open gym, host local programs, and even birthday parties year-round.

New Directions

New Directions of Horry County recently reorganized and repurposed some of its different organizations in a continued effort to support the homeless and abuse of the Grand Strand. During the workshop Tuesday, council members learned that pest control is still a problem at the organization’s shelters, and they are doing everything they can to battle it.

Parking Meters

The council considered passing the second reading of an ordinance that would enforce time restrictions on all drivers, even those with a city decal.

Myrtle Beach Marathon

The 2016 Myrtle Beach Marathon requested that the council change the date to March 4 through 6.
