60,000 bikers expected in Darlington County this weekend

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) An estimated 60,000 bikers are expected to flock to our area for the National Bikers Round up.

It’s an event held every year.

This year it’s being held in Darlington County.

On Thursday, those bikers are expected to roll in and stay throughout the weekend.

This is the 38th year the National Bikers Round up has been held.

“It’s about the bikers and family. It’s like a family reunion we get together once a year in different states and this year they voted to come to South Carolina,” Rozell Nunn, Founder of National Bikers Round up said.

Nunn said 38 years ago it started as a small gathering, but has now grown to encompass bikers from across the entire US.

“Food, music, and a bike show and we have three events for children, three events for women and three events for men,” Nunn said.

Organizers said at least 30,000 people show up for the event, but they’re expecting up to 60,000.

The Florence Convention and Visitors Bureau said that all hotels in Florence and Hartsville are booked for the event.

The F.C.V.B. added bikers have booked hotel rooms in Columbia and Myrtle Beach.

The soon coming huge crowds have prompted law enforcement from different jurisdictions to come to Darlington County to maintain traffic concerns and crowd control.

“Anytime that you bring in that many people, especially bikers the chances are that you are going to have  some type of  traffic problem. A concern is the possibility of having a fatality with a biker,” Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said.

The Darlington County Sheriff’s Office said there will be known biker gang members at the event and are prepared should any type of commotion arises.

“That’s true and certainly we  try to prepare for that and look out for those groups like you said that is a very small percentage of the people coming to this event,” Byrd said.
