DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A Nichols man was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of 40-year-old Tina Scott Locklear, whose body was found near the Little Pee Dee River in October of 2013.

Dan Howard Cook pleaded guilty Tuesday to save Scott’s family from having to go through the turmoil of a trial, according to Solicitor Ed Clements with the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Cook must serve at least 85 percent of his 25-year prison sentence.

Cook was arrested after a passerby found the naked body of Locklear left at the edge of the Little Pee Dee River in Dillon County. An investigation revealed she had been beaten in the head with a blunt object nine times, Solicitor Clements said. Marion County Sheriff Mark Richardson confirmed that their investigation found the woman had been killed in a home a day before she was found.

After a search warrant on that home, Cook was taken into custody on an unrelated charge, and originally charged with murder.
