Inmate found dead after apparent assault at Bennettsville Federal Correctional Institution

BENNETTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - An inmate was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive at the Bennettsville Federal Correctional Institution, after an apparent assault from another inmate, according to officials.

The inmate identified as Larry Carter, was found unresponsive,  he was an apparent victim of an inmate assault. Staff immediately contained the area and initiated life saving measures.

Carter was transported to a local medical facility where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 p.m.

The FBI was notified and the incident is under investigation as a possible homicide. All inmates are temporarily confined to their cells.

The institution will return to full programming as soon as possible. No staff or other inmates were injured during the incident, and at no time was the public in danger.

Inmate Larry Carter was a 44-year-old inmate sentenced in the Middle District of North Carolina, serving 188 months for; Distribution of Cocaine Hydrochloride, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm; with a consecutive 48 month sentence for Possession with Intent to Distribute and Distribution of Cocaine Base (Crack).

The Federal Correctional Institution in Bennettsville was activated in 2005, and currently houses approximately 1,500 medium security male offenders.
