Once in a blue moon... happens tonight

MYRTLE BEACH (WMBF) - There's a reason "once in a blue moon" is a saying, and tonight will prove that. A blue moon occurs when we see two full moons in one calendar month.

Many people infer that the moon will actually be blue, but unfortunately it will appear pale gray-white just like any other night. There are instances where the moon can appear blue. Much like the sky during dawn or dusk, when light enters the atmosphere and collides with the aerosols, it scatters. Depending on which angle we are perceiving, the object at depends on which color we see. It's possible that the blue moon tonight may actually appear red!

Head outside tonight around dusk and check out this fun astronomical occurrence. The moon will rise tonight around 8:23 p.m. It may also be a good night to get out and do something that you would only do "once in a blue moon."
