Time is ticking: council considers parking limit

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Time could be limited for how long you are able to park in certain public lots as the Myrtle Beach City Council considers a new parking proposal.

The ordinance, discussed during Tuesday's council meeting, proposes that smaller lots have a three-hour time limit.

One of those lots includes 14 spots in front of Mr.Sub. The owner, Ken Conley, was just one of multiple business owners in attendance at the meeting.

He explained many employees of other businesses or beach-goers will park for the majority of the day, keeping customers from being able to park near his shop.

"People drive in and see it full, they drive away not realizing there is a free parking spot out back," said Conley.

He is talking about the City Hall lot nearby. Conley suggested to City Council on Tuesday that they put up signage to let people know they could park there for free.

He believes this ordinance for limiting the parking time is the first step.

"A three hour limit will encourage turn-over, allow more people to use those spaces,” said city spokesperson Mark Kruea.

Kruea explained it will not be a metered lot, but enforcement could be as simple as marking your tires with chalk.
