PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – A 42-year-old man drowned in the south end inlet in Pawleys Island Monday evening, police officials confirmed.

Gabriel Lewis, of Myrtle Beach, died after drowning in the creek at the south end inlet in Pawleys Island, confirmed Police Chief Michael Fanning.

The drowning occurred at about 5:56 p.m., during a time of very high tide, Chief Fanning said. It appears that Lewis, who was in Pawleys Island with his cousin, lost his footing and got swept into the water, Chief Fanning said. Lewis was submerged for over five minutes.

Someone pulled him out of the creek and performed CPR on him, and a Midway Fire Rescue crew arrived and continued CPR, Chief Fanning said.

This is the first drowning in Pawleys Island this summer, according to Chief Fanning.

“Please exercise caution while swimming at all times,” a Pawleys Island Police official stated in the tweet.
