3rd Avenue South construction to finish later than expected

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The 3rd Avenue South construction project started some time ago, and according to SCDOT, it won't be ending soon.

The project was originally set to finish this month, then it changed to November. Now SCDOT says it's looking more like next spring or summer.

"It's just causing issues with everything, said Selina Patterson, owner of longtime 3rd Avenue South business Strand Tan.

For months now, the nearly $10 million project has been underway. When finished, it will widen the road to three lanes, adding sidewalks and landscaping.

Now the project is almost a year behind schedule, and businesses like Strand Tan are worried they will lose even more customers due to construction.

"You can stop at every single business on 3rd Avenue South, and every single business will tell you it's hurt them, and that they want it to be finished, Patterson explained.

SCDOT says the last winter storm is the big reason the project is behind schedule. Crews also ran into unexpected problems with drainage, which pushed the end date back even more.

The department says right now, one side of the road is completely finished. Crews still have utility work on the other side before getting to bigger projects like paving.

"We just really were looking forward to it ending, and it was devastating to hear that it's going to be another year, said Patterson.

Many of the businesses we spoke with say they are excited for the finished product, but wish it was coming sooner.

SCDOT says its contractor is hopeful to finish sooner than that later date.
