Surfside Beach looking to better showcase amenities to tourists

Occupancy rates predicted to be 96% July 4 weekend Occupancy rates predicted to be 96% July 4 weekend

SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - In the competition over tourists, sometimes the most obvious advantage is what you already have at your disposal.

Surfside Beach town Councilman Ralph Magliette says his town has everything a visitor would need.

The problem is, those visitors don't always know where to go.

That's where a town brochure containing a map and 62 recommended bars, restaurants, and businesses comes into play.

I think its good for everybody, explained the councilman. We want to be promoting our businesses, and promote the wonderful town of Surfside Beach. I call Surfside Beach the little gem. I want to protect that.

This week, town council will consider an experiment with those maps. If approved, dozens of businesses around Surfside Beach would get a stack of those local tour guides to give out to visiting customers.

If visitors are believed to be using them after a few weeks, council will consider circulating more.

Its perfect free advertisement for us, said Douglas Schultz with the Sundown Sports Pub. They can walk into place and say, hey look at the Sundown, lets go check it out and see because weve seen it in this brochure.

Magliette says capitalizing on what Surfside has to offer is a huge opportunity for the town and its businesses.

Most of the town's revenue comes from those businesses, so it's time they start working together.

Right now, these guides to Surfside Beach are funded by ATAX money so they aren't distributed around the town. For this experiment to happen, the town would have to approve a different way of funding them.
