MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Two sisters, aged 1 and 2 of Laurinburg died from accidentally drowning in a pool in Marlboro County Friday, July 24, the county coroner confirmed. Funeral services have been scheduled for Monday, and the family has set up a GoFundMe page for expenses.

Coroner Tim Brown confirmed 2-year-old Kenlee Elizabeth Higgins and her sister, 1-year-old Devyn Sue Higgins, died in the hospital after apparently drowning in a pool at a home with a Bennettsville address off Highway 79. Coroner Brown confirmed that the drownings were ruled accidental.

The children were taken to a hospital in Cheraw after being found in the pool, Marlboro County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Charles Lemon confirmed. He said they received the call at around 10 a.m Friday morning.

The State Law Enforcement Division was notified of the incident, per the department’s policy.

Funeral services will take place at 4:00 p.m. Monday July 27 at Northview Harvest Ministries officiated by Pastor Kenneth Blease. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service Monday.

Kenlee and Devyn are survived by their mother, Jacklyn Smith Higgins; brothers, Holden Higgins, Landen Higgins and sister, Savannah Higgins all of the home in Laurinburg; grandparents, Kenny Smith (Sara) of Laurinburg, Peggy Cottingham (Freddie) of Bennettsville, SC and great grandmother, Margaret Smith of Laurinburg.

The mother of the children was working at the time of the accidental drowning; she is a single working mother with other children to support, according to the GoFundMe account page set up by the family.

If anyone would like to help in this time of need, the family has set up a GoFundMe account here.
