Pittsburgh man struck and killed by vehicle in Darlington County

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – A 49-year-old man From Pennsylvania was struck and killed by a passing motorist on I-20 in Darlington County Friday afternoon as he attempted to retrieve a piece of fallen luggage from the roadway, according to officials.

At about 3 p.m. Friday, David Sippey was traveling through Darlington County on I-20 with his family from Pittsburgh when a piece of luggage fell off the top of the vehicle, according to a news release from County Coroner Todd Hardee. Sippey stopped the vehicle on the side of the road and went to retrieve the luggage from the roadway.

Lance Cpl. Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol says the motorist who struck Sippey was driving a 2006 Mercedes. The driver and passenger did not sustain any injuries in the accident.

The Darlington County Coroner and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
