FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A 32-year-old man is in custody after allegedly shooting a 38-year-old man in the abdomen in Florence Thursday night.

The two men got into an argument at about 9:15 p.m. at King Grocery and Game Room on Gaillard Street in Florence, according to Major Carlos Raines with Florence Police. Gabriel Jacob Brown allegedly shot the victim and then ran from the scene.

Workers at King Grocery and Game Room said the shooting happened outside, but they were not sure what led to it. People living in the area said they heard it was an argument about the victim's girlfriend. They said the man who allegedly fired the gun didn't live in the neighborhood.

"Everybody here is like a big family," said Dougie Hendrix, who lives on Gaillard Street. "I don't really know it to be nobody beefing or anything like that. That's why I'm surprised that this happened."

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, Major Raines said.

"I got a phone call that my homeboy got shot," Hendrix said. "He was an older cat. Every time I saw him he was always cool like, 'What's up Dougie?'"

Officers responded to the scene and saw a man with a gun running by their vehicle. They stopped him and identified him as the suspect in the shooting.

"I don't understand. I'm just glad I wasn't here and my little brothers weren't here because that's something I don't want to see them go through or even hear or none of that," Hendrix said.

Brown was booked into the Florence County Detention Center at 2:53 a.m. and charged with attempted murder. Bond was set at $80,000 on Friday afternoon. While filling out paperwork in court, Brown said he was recently living on the streets of Florence or Kingstree.

Judge Linward Edwards said he set the bond high because even though Brown doesn't have a previous criminal record, he thinks he's a danger to the community based on the accusations in the case.

Brown's initial appearance in court will be September 24 at the Florence County Complex.
