Close Lightning Strike Caught on WMBF Skycam

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF)- Strong to severe thunderstorms moved through northeastern South Carolina Monday evening, briefly knocking out power for some.

Some wind damage occurred in Horry County on Highway 366 and the storms contained incredible amounts of lightning. The National Weather Service in Wilmington says the wind damage is the result of a microburst with winds of 75 miles per hour. There were reports of pea size hail in Myrtle Beach and quarter size hail near Longs. Between 4:00 and 4:15 p.m., there were more than 1,500 lightning strikes across Horry County, according to our HD Doppler Radar.

The WMBF News skycam in Myrtle Beach caught the lightning strike that temporarily interrupted power to the studio around 5:10 p.m. Monday; power was restored within minutes. That lightning also struck the tower which holds the skycam.
