G.K. Young takes 2015 CPL Home Run Derby crown

FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) - Petersburg catcher G.K. Young won the 2015 Coastal Plain League Home Run Derby on Sunday night after taking out the rest of the field in three rounds.
Young - who plays for Coastal Carolina during the school year - won the title just an hour away from his campus, at Sparrow Stadium in Florence.
After beating three other CPL East squad all-stars through two rounds, he advanced to the finals to take on Ryan Mincher from Asheboro.
In the finals, Young hit three homers, good for seven points (two with a wooden bat, one with aluminum). Mincher only managed to hit one, giving G.K. Young the crown.
Two other local products were in the derby - J.D. Crowe, a catcher for Francis Marlon in the spring, was eliminated in the second round. Ben Holland, first baseman for the Florence RedWolves, was knocked out in the first round.
Young, Crowe and Holland all will start for their teams in the CPL All-Star game Monday night in Florence. First pitch is set for 7:15.
