MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Myrtle Beach police officers are reminding people to protect pets from summer heat.

The department posted a picture to its Facebook page,  illustrating how a sunny day quickly heated an enclosed car to intolerable levels, even with the outside temperature staying in the low 70s.

Pets cannot survive such heat! Leaving pets unattended in hot vehicles is a misdemeanor, subject to a fine of up to $500 and/or 30 days in jail, upon conviction, the post reads.

If you see a dog in trouble, trapped in a car with no owner in sight, please contact the Myrtle Beach Police Department at 843-918-1382 immediately!
