Darlington City Councilman announces candidacy for Mayor

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - Darlington City Councilman James "Jimmy" Cooper III formally announced his candidacy for Mayor of Darlington, SC.

Cooper announced Monday, he will be seeking to do more than just share his vision for the future, "I hope to also get your input and your commitment towards making a better city for all of our citizens."

Cooper stated that although progress has been made, there is still much to do to make Darlington better.

Cooper was elected to Darlington City Council in 2011 and has served on the Darlington City Planning Commission and the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association. Cooper is also a fourth-generation owner of Cooper's Barbershop in Darlington.

The City of Darlington General Election is scheduled for November 3, according to the SCVotes 2015 Election Calenda.

According to current Mayor Tony Watkins, "The City has vigorously worked to revitalize the downtown area through a partnership with a historically oriented developer as well as improvements to our streetscape.  Further plans are underway to promote the economic vitality of downtown and the entire city."

Watkins was elected Mayor of the City of Darlington in November 2003, he previously served as a city council member for 16 years.
