DARLINGTON, COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A juvenile is in custody in connection with a shooting Sunday in Hartsville that left a 34-year-old man dead, authorities confirmed.

“There were several police officers over here, they had it roped off,” said Charles Smalls who lives in Darlington County. “I don’t know if they blocked traffic off, but I imagine it held traffic up. People were coming by seeing what was going on.”

Charles Smalls’ family business sits just across the street from where Darlington County investigators said 34-year-old Quincy Richardson was shot.

The Darlington County Coroner pronounced Richardson dead at the hospital and ruled his death a homicide.

“It involved two people doing something they had no business doing,” Smalls said.

Smalls said his family’s gas station has been located along South 5th Street for more than 50 years and the area has always been fairly quiet when it comes to crime.

On Monday afternoon, the Sherriff’s office charged a 16-year-old in the case.

“It’s our understanding that Mr. Richardson confronted the teenager on 5th street just outside the City of Hartsville, “said Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd. “We believe this juvenile stole some stuff from him”

At this point, that’s all the sheriff’s office can say about this ongoing case.

Shortly after that shooting, investigators said the 16-year-old suspect left the scene and was later found and captured in Columbia.

Investigators were able to tie the 16-year-old to the alleged crime because of witnesses.

The 16-year-old will be brought back to Darlington County and locked up.

That suspect will then face a charge of unlawful carry of a handgun in family court Tuesday morning.
